INA OYA - Venerating Oya With A Fire Ritual
Eri Oya o! Eri Oya o! Eri Oya!
Iba Oya oriri
Today is Ose Oya, an auspicious day to give thanks to and venerate Oya.
Orisa Oya, the formidable deity of whirlwinds, thunderstorms, tornadoes and water, the beloved favorite wife of Shango, is known for her transformative powers and mastery over the elements, warrior spirit, motherhood, courage, determination, resilience, passion, loyalty, protection and of course, supernatural abilities.
It is, therefore, no surprise, that one of the elements, fire, is used to venerate her. A fire invocation ritual(Ina Oya) is one of the ways to honor/venerate Orisa Oya. It can come up during Idafa(Ifa divination), as was the case with Gbonariri in Oturupon Owonrin.
Ifa ni:
Ótúrúpón wónnifa
Díá fún gbonariri
Omo aboyasegun
Òun le segun sétè ní n dáfá si
Won ni o kara nle
Ebo ni ko wa muse
Gbonariri was facing challenges(from multiple sources and negative energies) and as part of his ebo he was asked to appease Oya through a fire ritual. After the ritual was done, he overcame his challenges and emerged victorious.
In the old days(and in some temples today), Ina Oya was made with Edun Ara, which sparks the fire and then wood is added. An alternative is to ignite some gin on a plate and then invoke the essence of Oya, focosing intently on her energy and then calling on her to use her transformative powers to cleanse you of whatever negativities are causing you challenges. If you are not an Oya devotee/initiate or you don't know what you are doing, I suggest asking to have this done on your behalf.
We will be looking at the elements in upcoming workshops and how they are used in Isese to venerate the deities. We are kicking things off with water in the Spiritual Power of Water Workshop and then fire will be next. If you are interested, check out the workshops page.
